Photography in the Wake of Postmodernism is one of the new rooms opening in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum that sets to explore work associated with the postmodernist movement. Featuring the work of some of photography’s most influential artists, (in the likes of Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince), it spans a period of over 30 years, beginning in the early 70’s.
When exploring the photographs within the exhibition, perhaps one of the most intriguing elements is the fact that postmodernist photography is normal. The ‘three strategies,’ employed by these artists of either quotation, parody or appropriation are no longer innovative approaches in the communication of ideas today. What one takes away from the exhibition seemed to be a general sense of appreciation of the selected works shown, an understanding of their incredible influence on other practitioners, but also an underlying sense that this is a summary of an era. So what is next?
